Once Upon a Time in Africa: Redefining Traditions and Embracing Motherhood
In the heart of Africa, a powerful movement is emerging, challenging long-held societal norms and empowering women to break free from the chains of tradition. For countless generations, African women found themselves confined to the kitchen and the ‘other room’, their voices silenced and dreams suppressed. But a resilient spirit, fueled by the desire for change, began to awaken among them.
Tired of the shackles that held them back, many women chose to rise against the status quo. They sought knowledge, not only to emancipate themselves but to strengthen the very fabric of their communities. Education became their beacon of hope, a pathway leading to a brighter future, and a tool to demonstrate their unwavering support for their families.
However, the economic situation proved to be both a blessing and a curse. With newfound knowledge came aspirations, and women yearned for self-fulfillment and accomplishments before settling into marriage, a decision they had never been granted a say in before. On the flip side, the men desire an accomplished woman and this has led to the rise of a unique phenomenon – older women embracing motherhood later in life. A few by choice while others, due to teh circumstance that plagues under developed countries e.g education strikes, finances to further education and the slow climb for career women amongst other disadvantages.
These women defied the preconceived notion that motherhood must be confined to youth, proving that age was no barrier to love, care, and devotion. The brave souls who embarked on this journey of motherhood later in life faced criticism and excommunication, harshly judged for choices not entirely their own. Society, marred by age-old beliefs, condemned them for daring to embrace a path less traveled.
Yet, through the darkness of stigma and societal scorn, a new narrative emerged. The brave voices of these older women united, speaking out against the condemnation they faced. They knew that every woman, regardless of age, deserved the chance to experience the joy and wonder of motherhood. Their stories resonated with women across the continent, igniting the flames of change.
And so, on the 6th of August 2023, at 5 PM WAT, these incredible women will gather for an Instagram live event, “From Stigma to Strength: Celebrating the Journey of Motherhood.” They will share their stories of resilience, love, and triumph, proving that motherhood knows no boundaries, and strength knows no age.
