Pregnancy is a miraculous journey filled with excitement and anticipation, regardless of age. For women embarking on this journey after the age of 35, often referred to as “older moms,” there may be additional considerations and concerns. While age is just a number, older moms need to prioritize their health and well-being during pregnancy. Here are some essential tips to help navigate a healthy pregnancy journey after 35.

Consult with a Healthcare Provider:

The first and most crucial step for any pregnant woman, especially those over 35, is to consult with a healthcare provider. Your obstetrician or midwife can offer personalised guidance based on your medical history, current health status, and any potential risks associated with advanced maternal age. You must research the hospital as not all hospitals in Nigeria (and some other countries in Africa) recognise older motherhood and hence will not give you the care you need. If you can not afford then be equipped with the knowledge to request for the right care.

Focus on Nutrition:

A balanced diet rich in nutrients is vital for a healthy pregnancy, particularly for older moms. Ensure your meals include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and dairy products. Consider taking prenatal vitamins containing folic acid, iron, and calcium to supplement your diet and support the healthy development of your baby. These vitamins are usually part of your ante-natal routine. I for one used Pregnacare by Vitabolics after talking to my gyno about it. DO NOT TAKE ANY DRUGS WITHOUT CONSULTING WITH YOUR DOCTOR.

Maintain a Healthy Weight:

While weight gain is a natural part of pregnancy, it’s essential to aim for a healthy weight gain within recommended guidelines. Being overweight or underweight can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery. Work with your healthcare provider to establish a suitable weight gain target based on your pre-pregnancy BMI. I understand that most of us can not afford a nutritionist but please do not use any traditional method to lose weight while pregnant as you can harm your baby. ‘Agbo’ known by Nigerians is good but note that we have different reactions to different drugs so be cautious.

Stay Active:

Regular exercise can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts, boost your mood, and promote overall well-being. Engage in low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, or modified strength training. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise routine and listen to your body’s cues. 30 minutes is recommended for at least 3 times a week, talk a causal walk with your spouse or alone. It is a good way to also say your affirmations and enjoy nature.

Monitor Your Health:

Older moms may face a higher risk of certain pregnancy-related conditions, such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or chromosomal abnormalities. Attend all prenatal appointments diligently and undergo recommended screenings and tests to monitor your health and the well-being of your baby. Early detection and intervention can significantly improve outcomes. As said earlier, some hospitals are not aware of these essential tests and recommendations so please if your healthcare provider does not tell you about them, request them. You might have to pay more but it will keep you and baby on a healthy part.

Prioritize Rest and Relaxation:

Pregnancy can be physically and emotionally demanding, especially for older moms who may juggle other responsibilities such as work and family. Make self-care a priority by getting an adequate amount of rest, practising relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation, and delegating tasks when necessary. Listen to your body and give yourself permission to slow down when needed. Google or YouTube for short relaxation techniques and spoil yourself now and then. I for one did a 15-minute relaxation in the morning on the staff bus as we drove to work.

Educate Yourself:

Knowledge is empowering, especially when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. Take advantage of prenatal education classes, online resources, books, and support groups tailored to older moms. Educating yourself about the changes happening in your body, labour and delivery, breastfeeding, and newborn care can help alleviate anxiety and build confidence. Follow our handles and read our blog post often as we share stories and resources to help you through your pregnancy and birthing journey. We love you!

Seek Emotional Support:

Pregnancy can evoke a range of emotions, from joy and excitement to anxiety and fear, regardless of age. Surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, and healthcare professionals who can offer encouragement, guidance, and reassurance throughout your pregnancy journey. Don’t hesitate to seek professional counselling if you’re struggling with emotional challenges.

Conclusion:

Pregnancy after the age of 35 presents unique considerations and challenges, but with proper care and attention, older moms can experience a healthy and fulfilling pregnancy journey. By prioritizing your health, nutrition, fitness, and emotional well-being, you can set the stage for a smooth transition into motherhood and welcome your newborn with confidence and joy. Remember, age is just a number, and with the right support, every mom can embrace the magic of pregnancy and childbirth at any stage of life.
