Around the world, women are increasingly choosing motherhood later in life. From public figures and celebrities openly sharing their journeys to advances in fertility and healthcare, older motherhood is becoming more visible and accepted.

But in Nigeria, the story is often very different.

Women who become mothers after 35 are frequently met with judgement, unsolicited opinions, and stigma. Instead of empathy, they are questioned. Instead of support, they are often blamed or dismissed, even within healthcare settings, where many report feeling unsupported despite being classified as high-risk pregnancies that require specialised medical and emotional care.

Yet the reality is changing.

Economic pressures, career aspirations, delayed marriage, infertility, and personal life circumstances mean more Nigerian women are becoming mothers later than previous generations. This is not a passing trend, it’s a growing reality that deserves understanding, better healthcare, and stronger community support.

So why are we still treating older motherhood as something to whisper about?

This July, join Moms Round Table as we have an honest conversation about breaking the stigma, challenging harmful stereotypes, and exploring how families, healthcare professionals, employers, and society can better support women navigating motherhood after 35.

At Momat4ty, we believe every woman deserves access to accurate information, compassionate support, and the confidence to make informed decisions about her reproductive journey regardless of her age.

Let’s change the narrative together because older motherhood shouldn’t be a taboo. It should be understood, supported, and celebrated.
