If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is this: our bodies speak, and as women, we often hear them… but sometimes, we have been taught to brush things aside.
Especially in our Nigerian culture, where there is always a story, an explanation, or even a joke for every pregnancy symptom.
“Ah, your nose is swelling? It’s a boy.”
“You’re vomiting too much? Definitely a girl.”
We smile, we laugh, and sometimes we hold on to these beliefs because they feel familiar. But my dear, while culture gives us comfort, it should never replace care.
If you are 35 and above, your pregnancy deserves a little more attention, a little more listening, and a lot more intention.
Let me walk you through five symptoms I would never advise you to ignore.
1. Severe Headache

Not every headache is “just stress” or “hormones.”
If the pain is strong, persistent, and refuses to go away even after rest, please pay attention. I know how easy it is to say, “Let me just lie down, it will pass.” But some headaches are your body’s way of raising a flag.
Especially when it comes with:
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Sensitivity to light
At this stage in life, we don’t guess with our health. We check.
2. Persistent, Severe Vomiting

Now let’s talk about this one, because we joke about it a lot.
“You’re vomiting too much? Ah, na girl.”
And yes, many of us have heard that growing up. But when vomiting becomes constant, when you cannot keep food down, when even water feels like a struggle, that is no longer gist for the aunties.
Your body is losing fluids. Your strength is dropping. And your baby depends on you being nourished.
This is not something to endure quietly. Get help early.
3. Very Itchy Skin (Especially Hands and Feet)

Pregnancy can make your skin stretch and itch, yes. But there is a kind of itching that is different.
The one that sits deep in your palms and the soles of your feet.
The one that keeps you awake at night.
That one is not ordinary.
It may seem small, but it can be linked to something internal that needs attention. Don’t just apply cream and move on. Ask questions. Get checked.
4. Severe Abdominal Pain

We grew up hearing, “Pregnancy comes with pain.” And that is true—to an extent.
But there is a difference between discomfort and pain that stops you in your tracks.
Sharp. Intense. Persistent.
As Nigerian women, many of us have high pain tolerance. We carry on, we endure, we keep moving. But in pregnancy, especially after 35, this is one time to pause and say, “No, let me be sure.”
Your peace of mind matters.
5. Swelling of the Feet and Nose

This is myu favourite and let’s be honest, we’ve all heard this one:
“Your nose is swelling and you are having duck legs hmm…na boy be this!”
I was told this when pregnant funny how I foundout that it could be a dangerous sign now a gender identifier.
While these sayings can be lighthearted, sudden or excessive swelling is not something to overlook.
If your feet, hands, face, or even nose begin to swell noticeably, especially if it happens quickly, it could be your body asking for attention.
Don’t laugh it off. Don’t wait it out.
Just check.
A Gentle Reminder
My dear, culture is beautiful. It connects us, it gives us stories, it gives us laughter.
But when it comes to your health and your baby, let culture sit beside care, not replace it.
You are not overreacting by asking questions.
You are not being dramatic by going to the hospital.
You are being responsible.
At this stage in our lives, we don’t take chances, we take action.
Listen to your body. Trust what you feel. And never hesitate to seek professional care.
At Momat4ty, we are here to walk this journey with you—gently, honestly, and with the kind of care every woman deserves.
Remember, always speak to a qualified healthcare professional if you notice any of these symptoms.
